Give it time. I come from a "Marine family" gramps, ex-husband and soon to be son in law. They both have their qualities, but I personaly think firefighting is more rewarding but i have never been dirctly in your shoes. I would like to say a big "Thank You" for what you do as serviceman and as a fireman.
