Hey Emily,
First just wanted to say thanks for the add. Second I wanted to let you know lifeguarding is awesome! I used to lifeguard in San Diego @ Mission Bay when I used to live there & then at a couple of local swim clubs. Beaches are much better! Anyways glad to see you chose the fire service. There's nothing sweeter than the rush you get when you're inside fighting fire!
Ok have a great day,
Lyater,

Hey Em,
I actually do both-I'm a volunteer w/the Alplaus FD as an interior FF/EMT and my paid occupation is as a Paramedic with Mohawk Ambulance Service which services Up-State NY with stations in Schenectady (my station), Albany, Troy, Brunswick and a 2nd station in Albany opening soon. On average we do about 60,000+ calls a year.
In addition I am also a a part of the Albany Medical Children's Hospital NICU/PICU team where we drive to any hospital within a 300 mile radius and pick-up Neonates/pediatric pt's who are in need of more advanced medical help which can be performed mostly @ AMC(Albany Medical Center) and if not then they either go to Boston children's hospital or a Hospital in NYC but I forgot the name!
I also voluenteer for Hancock Hope which is a non-profit organization set up after Hurricane katrina to support local FD, Community's, and others in need where FEMA has fallen short. I'm actually enticipating a deployment fairly shortly to the Gulf Coast with the new threat of Hurricane Gustev baring down on Mississippi and other parts of the region.
Well I gotta get back to work-I'm @ work just don't anyone that we don't do anywork!
Layter,

Advice...um well one of my favorite sayings is: "No day like today." Which I pretty much put into practice everyday-'cause you never know when it's ur time. I always think it is a good idea to take as many fire classes as you can now-when your still young, and the good thing is it's free training. At least up here Schenectady County Fire Coordinators office offers free fire courses almost every month. It's in addition to your weekly departmental training and it keeps you on your toes.
Another piece of advice would be try to get onto a FEMA like deployment organization. I volunteer for a group called Hancock Hope: http://www.firefighternation.com/profiles/blog/show?id=889755%3ABlogPost%3A829161 That's a link where you find more about it-but basically we help other departments and support communities in need after natural disasters where FEMA and the government has dropped the ball. It gives real-life training/experience while a sense of helping in need.
So now I get to ask you something-where is Horseheads? Is it on the Island (Long Island)? That's only place I can thing of-I went down two weeks after 9/11 and helped at Ground Zero and had some friends who lived just outside the city and I can almost swear we went through a similar named place.
-sorry about the length,
-Runx
Yes I was there-there's not much to say about it-I guess it was very somber 2 weeks. I'm not sure that's the right word-but when I think about it, it is something I'm gracious to be apart of it-but wish I hadn't at the same time. Like, I think I would have been happier if there wasn't a need for us to go down you know what I mean-like if that day never happened I'd be ok with that. I don't think being apart of that experience has made my story of being a firefighter "better" or more "impacting" instead the events that happened on 9/11 and the days that followed changed me, changed all of us forever. And in each of our own way, we all have our "lil" story of how 9/11 changed us. I sometimes take a step and look at my life and all things I've been apart of or in, and don't get me wrong I'm not ashamed of the things I've done, but I pray that my children (someday), never have to see the things I've seen, or have to go through alot of what we firefighters are exposed to.
Ground Zero was I there-yes; but I'm not proud of how we as a country, got there and of many families were counting on us to find their loved ones, alive or dead, but find something they could lay to rest. We searched and searched and searched but we were surrounded by dust-so much dust...

Hi FireBarbie, I’m a retired Fire Chief and understand the importance of health & fitness for our responders. I joined FF Nation to share my incredible wellness story with everyone. Fitness is only a part of the equation; internal wellness is the real essential for healthy responders. Many of us need to get healthier.
