I became a paramedic because I have always had an interest in the medical field, and getting to be the first on scene to treat patients is a really exciting and fast paced way to practice medicine and get to make decisions and think on your feet. I got into firefighting for the excitement, adrenaline, and was hoping to be a part of the brotherhood, tradition, dedication, passion, service. The more time that I spend in it, the more that I respect the people that have dedicated their lives to it, not just the major sacrifices such as losing lives, but also, the everyday sacrifices such as leaving your family to go to that call, being called away in the middle of important moments, having longevity and remembering why they do this, day in and day out for 25+ years. These are the reasons that firefighters are held in a higher esteem in my eyes. I believe that when the cockiness and bravado of youth wear off and those few that are left displaying wisdom, genuiness, and have escaped cynicism, then the true "heroes" are shown.
Hi Megan!
How's Waconia?
Have you heard about the North Star Women's Firefighting Association? NSWFA.org?
There is the Women's fire service expo being held again this year on May 31st. I would imagine that the coordinators would love to have another female firefighter help out...interested?
Check out the website www.NSWFA.org Note the two firefighters on the home page...I'm the one on the right!!
The website has tons of information on events, trainings, activities etc. I am sure that you can contact Kim Cummings anytime if you have any questions, or I can see if I can help you too.
Did you ever meet Kim? She was at a training burn out in Waconia a while back.
I am a member of the NSWFA. I have met some terrific ladies and really enjoy the training, most of it done exclusively for women.
I like to train with anyone, but being just gals, it is a fun sense of sisterhood.
Tell me about Waconia's department. How big is it, are you all volunteer? etc...
Be safe and have a great day!
Judi
Thanks for the add...I commented again on your discussion ...I love the forum we have here and the freedom of discussion!!! Stay safe and hope to hear from you soon!!
