About Me:
I AM NOW IN MY 16TH YEAR AS A FIREFIGHTER BOTH VOLUNTEER AND FULL TIME AND STILL LOVING IT.
Day Job:
FULL TIME FIREFIGHTER
Relationship Status:
Single
Why I Joined Fire/EMS
I GREW UP TWO BLOCKS FROM OUR CITY DEPARTMENT, I WOULD FOLLOW WHERE THE ENGINE WOULD GO ON MY BIKE AND BE FASCINATED WITH WHAT EVERYONE WAS DOING ON THE FIRE GROUND. THEN WHEN I WAS OLD ENOUGH AND MOVED BACK TO TOWN, I WENT THE STATION AND FELL IN LOVE WITH THE JOB TO A POINT WHERE I NOW VOLUNTEER AND WORK A FUL TIME POSITION IN THE FIRE SERVICE.
Why I Love Fire/EMS
THE BROTHERHOOD AND THE RUSH I STILL GET WHEN RUNING INTO A BURNING BUILDING AND THE STATISFACTION FROM A JOB WELL DONE.
Top Issues Facing Responders:
THE TOP ISSUES TODAY WOULD STILL HAVE TO BE FIREFIGHTER SAFETY AND TRAINING.

Hey Joe, You want to trade hazmat training stuff? Here's a drill I put together based on a real incident that happened to some firefighters in a neighboring county. Without getting wordy here, the chemical involved was zinc phosphide (CAS Number: 1314-84-7). Look it up... Look and see what happens when water gets added to the product. And think exposure. Two days after an incident that involved a 55-gallon drum of this stuff resulted in one of the firefighter's coughing up bright red blood in an emergency room who was wearing a SCBA, NOT level A or B but firefighter turnouts when he was putting water onto this stuff because the material was on fire. From the pictures, you could see wisps of black smoke going past the firefighter. Again, he was wearing a SCBA and full structure gear. So we recreated the incident and enforced as a learning goal the need to look at all the constituents when dealing with a hazardous waste.
