I always wanted to be a firefighter, ever since I can remember. I grew up around fire trucks and firefighters and loved the show "Emergency!". When I turned 16 I had the oppurtunity to join Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad as a junior member, only because the fire department didn't allow members under 18. I took an EMT-B course and immediately realized that I loved emergency medicine and wanted to learn more. While I still want to be a career firefighter my true passion is in EMS (I am currently finishing up my paramedic degree)
Why I Love Fire/EMS
Helping those in need
Top Issues Facing Responders:
Safety, safety, safety. Recruitment and retention (specifically of qualified ALS providers) in rural volunteer systems. Making EMS professionals more recognized as medical professionals.
