hello all. i am 35 yrs. old, married, and a father to 4 beautiful and wonderful daughters. i am a volunteer fireman, licensed first responder, hazardous materials team member, and severe weather spotter in my community and around the county. fire fighting is not just a passion for me, but a family thing as well. my father in law, brother in law, and i all serve on the same department. we are hoping to add 1 more to this very soon, as my younger brother in law has began to show an interest in this line of work as well. i never understood the nature of our kind, nor gave notice to the men and women who lay it all on the line, until i put myself in their shoes . i now have a greater understanding, and a purpose in life. a purpose that makes life a whole lot more enjoyable. my helmet off to you all.

Joey:
The muscle group that you will use more than any others would be your legs.
Squats, running, bicycling, going up and down stairs, pulling a weight sled.
You will find that your legs and hips will be involved in about 80 percent of the physical tasks that you perform as a firefighter.
Study hard.

For Joey, you may want to start working on the workbook for the text you will be using at your fire academy. The IFSTA Essentials is a great book to get going in the right direction and cause you to delve deeper into studying ahead of time. Good luck!

I,ve had my name on the crew list at a volunteer department for 2 years now. I haven't had the opportunity to attend any fire school yet. During my first year I was attempting to complete my paramedic certification (to demanding to squeeze in fire school too) and had to put it on hold for another deployment overseas (Army Reserves). I've been overseas most of my second year and will be returning home soon. I look forward to starting my training again. A concern of mine is safety on the fireground. I wear glasses and am curious as to whether optical inserts can be used with the SCBA. Looking forward to learning some things on here and maybe even be able to share my half to 2 cents worth of knowledge. Have a great day and stay safe.

Hey guy & gals, Thanks for having me in your group. I'm kinda' new to the fire service, what I mean by that is, I had a couple of years of training waaaaay back in High school and finaly came back to my senses and joined a dept. in Aug. last year. Don't know why I didn't stick with it right out of school but, water under the bridge. I'm here to stay for good. I'm doing my FF1&2 at this time and will be finished in May. Best of luck to all the Probies out there and Be safe.

It's nice to see that I'm not the only probie in the group that started doing this in the 80's (EARLY 80's!). Seems like I went from probie to old guy in the blink of an eye!!
