To my brothers and sisters: Thank you for sending in your anonymous reports to www.csff.info. regarding firefighter suicides. The numbers from across the U.S. are staggering for both active and retired firefighters. To all members, if you know or hear of a suicide by a firefighter please fill out a suicide report at www.csff.info. I am the only one collecting this data at this time and it is very important that we don't forget our brothers and sisters who suffered such pain and felt this was their only way out. Thank you and Stay Safe!
Jeff, Considering the forum topic, it's not surprising that there are not a ton of responses. This is one of those things that typically gets quietly pushed aside and not talked about, hence the anonymous reporting to www.csff.info.
While I have only known a few firefighters that have taken their lives, the pain and sorrow the families and loved ones suffer afterwards is beyond words. Any effort you make toward helping these individuals will be so much appreciated by so many. Thank you for your efforts.
I challenge others reading this post to at least sign in and show your support for Chief Dill's project. It's a tough subject matter and saying thank you... it's the right thing to do.
Mike, Thank you for your support. Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance(www.ffbha.org), a 501 C 3 that I just organized will not only offer suicide awareness/prevention workshops for free for fire departments but as it grows will offer support for family members including camps for children of FF suicides. The e-mails I have received from surviving spouses regarding the pain that they suffer as well as the children are sad. If, by attending these camps, they can network with others it will let them know they are not alone, then FBHA will be successful. Take care Mike and Stay Safe!
Jeff
