Elizabeth, PA.--The local fire chief died while responding to a suspicious blaze at an old bar near his home in Elizabeth Borough early Wednesday.

Authorities said Fire Chief Leonard Bailey, who lived near the scene of the fire on North Water Street, collapsed while he was on his way to help.

Bailey, 56, was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center, where he died of a suspected heart attack. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Authorities said the fire started at about 1:20 a.m. in a vacant building that used to be called Phil's (sp) Bar which was owned by Baileys father under a different name years ago.

Allegheny County Fire Marshall Bob Full said the fire appears to be arson.

"It's an abandoned structure, there's no utilities, and it has a history of recent break-ins. There is no indicatiion other than this fire was intentionally set." Full said. "Coupled with Elizabeth and Allegheny County Police, we will be relentless in finding out who started this fire."
