Hello verry good subject. I happen to work at a cold storage facility, and am going through training to know what to do, and where all shut off valves, and electrical shut offs are in our plant. I do not know all that much yet other then what I learned so far, and what I learned when took Hassmat Awareness and Opps. I can say that we did have a small leak a coupple of times in one of our blast cells and I was able to go on air and help find the leak, with the maintenence mgr. He has showed me a…

He has showed me a lot as far as what to do, and is even trianing our janitor as well. I do hope that I never have to deal with any of the situations that you posted, but hope to learn as much as I can incase I do. We do have a small packing/cold facility in our local dist, and do hope that we never have to be called to it. We also being a farming and ag area, we have several fertilzer and spray storage facilitys as well. Sounds to me like you are exercising sound judgement. What's cool about the post is that you now have a more in-depth knowledge of the hazards associated with a release of NH3 inside a structure as well as the synergistic effect that the hydrocarbons in the oil contributes to the problem, lowering the flammable range lower limit to only 8%. Your only response option should be one of support from an uphill, upwind position where you can provide emergency decontamination and general START triage.…
