 itiates a new public awareness program,\n\n\nKeep the Wreath Red\n\nIn
  1980, a new fire service program, called “Keep the Wreath Red” wa
 s founded. Keep the Wreath Red has become an annual event, with fire d
 epartments all across the United States. The program is designed to fo
 cus an awareness of safety while decorating our homes for the holidays
 .\n\n\n\nHow the program works is quite simple; the fire department pl
 aces a wreath on the front of their building and lights it with a stri
 ng of red lights. The wreaths remain lit twenty-four hours a day throu
 ghout the holiday season. Whenever a fire occurs that is a result of h
 oliday decorations, a white bulb replaces a red bulb on the wreath. Th
 is serves as a constant reminder to practice safety while installing a
 nd displaying holiday decorations.\n\nSome suggestions to help make th
 is holiday season safer are:\n• Keep the use of extension cords to a
  minimum\n• If extension cords must be used, make sure they are free
  of cracked or split insulation, have appropriate grounding plugs in p
 lace\n• Keep all electrical wiring out of walkways or places where t
 hey may become pinched or worn\n• Read the packaging for all lights 
 to be sure you are not overloading your electrical circuits\n• Check
  the electrical wiring often for possible problems\n• Do not use can
 dles on or near combustible decorations\n• Do not leave burning cand
