Question: Are you on any other hiring lists?  What would you do if another city called you?

This can be tough to answer because you do not want to lie. The best statement is that you are excited about this position and will be a dedicated part of the department. You do want them to believe that you have no intentions of leaving or pursuing other firefighter positions else where. Keep in mind that the department that is interviewing you is investing a lot of time and money into you and your training. This is often a concern to smaller departments.

Question: Tell us about yourself.

Your poise and delivery are being scrutinized here. “Uh well, there isn’t much to say” won’t cut it here. You should have a one minute canned speech about yourself. Consider writing an outline from high school to present high lighting any training or experience relating to the fire or EMS service. Remember, this type of question is geared toward not so much what you say, but how you say it. They have read you application; they know most of what you will probably say. They what to hear and see how you tell it!
Great advice Roger. You never want to lie.

You may have a more vested interest in another department, say your home town or another department is offering a higher starting salary, but in these times best to take what ever is offered to you first. In my area, people can "lateral" to another department. Usually one within their county or jurisdiction. This practice is fairly well accepted since we all know most, if not everyone who works in our county. Roger said it best, departments invest a lot of time in money in hiring and training personnel. They don't want to spend that money training other peoples personnel.....:)

One thing to keep in mind. Your first department is like your first love, she can be hard to leave. You form bonds and start to learn a system that maybe much different from other department, more or less. To have to start over can be a daunting task, form a mental stand point.

Best of luck,

Thadias
