Washington, D.C. Firefighters Rescue Kids from Apartment Fire

WASHINGTON - A D.C. fire official says three children are in critical condition after a fire in an apartment building.

Firefighters were called to the 1900 block of Naylor Road southeast around 6 a.m. Wednesday and found smoke coming from the second floor of the three story building. Fire department spokesman

Pete Piringer says firefighters found a 5-year-old boy, 2-year-old girl and a 5- or 6-month old girl unconscious or semiconscious in a second-floor apartment.

He says the children were taken to an area trauma center where they are in critical, but stable, condition and suffering from smoke inhalation. Piringer says the fire was contained to the kitchen of the apartment where the children were found. He says the cause is still under investigation.
