It's the first time I see you start the comment with "I agree......",Professor Dunn.

I agree with you that firemen can feel the heat on the roof,as what I said, the moment you feel the heat, probably the roof is about to collapse.I won't mind if you call me a coward, all I said was just advice, people can take, and can ignore.Comparing with the burning furniture,a fireman's life is more precious.Mr Dunn,if it's a cement roof, how long does it take cutting a vent with chainsaw(stone cutter)? You spend half an hour to cut a vent on a cement roof, and I'm pretty damn sure all the furniture inside becomes ash.

Let's put it this way.I know the roof was table, just like most of the roofs of burning fire, like what you said,Kim,the fire didn't reach that high and impact on the roof. However, there was one thing you have ignored. The heat. We,as firemen, can see the smoke, white or black. But we can't not see the Heat though we can feel it.The truth is,no one can feel the heat on the roof. And if a fireman can feel the heat himself on the roof, that probably means,it's too late to escape.Kim,Kyle,it's not the smoke that ruins the roof,it is the heat that ruins it,and no one can feel or prodict it.My adivice is,since there is no evidence or sign of living victims, all we have to do is standing outside and shoot to wait the smoke vanishes.

The roof was stable.  They only did it for the smoke.  There was no danger of falling through.  The fire hadn't even reached that height.  It was stopped before it got that far.  It was done only for the smoke.

Anyway,I don't think that's a wise solution though maybe the best way to vent smoke. That scene a fireman fell into the burning warehouse in Ladder49 still bothers me.Perhaps it's been much longer for me to stay at the end of rope rescuing people than battling fire, making me very sensitive to high angles like roof or top.

They just vented.  They weren't fighting it from up there.  The smoke was going into the apartments on the side of the fire.  So they vented the roof to relieve it.  They were only up there for a few minutes.

I am confused why they were trying to battle fire on the roof which was probably weak and unstable due to high temperature smoke. The smoke was white, meaning the fire might probably became weaker as the fire comsumed the combustibles inside the house and would vanished itself.I personally think there was no need to go on the top of that house under such a circumstance on the risk of collapse.Shooting fire from outside maybe a better and safe way.
