HSO CERTIFICATION: The Public Safety Education Network (http://www.publicsafetyedu.com/) offers an on-line HSO course.  Those that successfully complete the course can take an exam for Pro Board Certification as an HSO.  The course fee is $80.00 and the exam fee is $95.00.  The course book is the 3rd edition of "Occupational Safety and Health in the Emergency Services" by James S Angle.  You can purchase the book from Amazon.com

Better to be safe,  then sorry, with alot of things in the fire service and that includes CO !!

Chuck,

From my experience I'd have to say that NO ONE should enter a CO situation without full PPE & SCBA.  Wearing SCBA with your mask hanging cannot protect you from CO.  Yes, maybe you only breathe a little, but CO is cumulative so why take the chance?

Hello all,

I have a question regarding your response to non-emergency CO alarms.  Currently our policy is to wear our SCBA's with our masks hanging, and run a gas meter through the area. In the event of a positive reading, pull back and reassess the situation.  My question is, Do any of your departments have policies in place requiring the first due company to be on air when first entering the area, or Do you not even require them to don SCBA's? also, How many companies do you have respond on CO alarms?  This is quickly turning into a hot topic at our department and I am just looking for some insight regarding other departments policies...

Hi Roberta,
Most states have specific standards for firefighting and related work (water rescue, confined space work, etc.). In WA, our standards are at: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=296-305 I suggest you enter your state "name" and "safety standards for firefighters" into a search engine, to see if your state's standards are online.
Then, the safety officer assists their dept. with making sure the standards are being followed, and necessary documentation is completed. I hope this helps. Your job is to help keep your team as safe as possible. Helping your team develop a safe attitude about the job is often the hardest part. That has to come from the highest dept. management to the newest recruit.
