The Backroom Crew

This is a place where we can sit down, put our feet up and chill. Where the Boys and Girls can just be themselves. The Back Room or what most firefighters call a ''day room or rec room'' is the social point of every firehouse.

Good luck Sarah. This has been a rotten week here ine midwest and tornado season is not over. I certainly have enough work to keep me busy.

So I discovered just a few days ago I do not want to be a career firefighter. It's just not for me. Saving lives for me is something I'll do on a volunteer basis.

I changed my career path to Protect and serve and work my way to either a K9 Narcotics officer or a Game Warden K9 Handler.

Oh how things just change because of a few events!

I'm working to get an instructor cert for pet first aid/CPR.

Awesome!

I may actually wait a year before taking the test ONLY because I REALLY need to get in better shape.

Sarah your doing the right thing by being the bigger person. I would have you on my department. I did my training in your State many years ago. I hope to read that you passed that test and continue to do well serving the great State Of Pennsylvania. I still have family there so I do leave kansas to come and visit.

Same here Kyle... the temptation was so high because last year they (York) wouldn't go to expo, and I was underage anyway when Harrisburg was there

GO FOR IT!

You never know until you try!

And Heather- I have never felt more happy with my life. I have begun the hard task of FINALLY reaching my goal in life.

During expo this year I actually ran into my former Asst. and Deputy fire chief. I never acted angry. I treated them like old friends. Why? Because I am NOT the kind of person to stay mad forever. Chief is still mad, but I treat him with respect on calls when I'm on the ambulance. Because I will NEVER let my emotions get the better of me EVER again. They almost made me take my own life before, and as my friend told me, "Sometimes you have to  fall to the lowest you can ever go before you do the great things I KNOW you can do"

I will NEVER EVER treat any member of that fire company in anyway except with RESPECT. I do not care what they did, I have moved on. And if they can't comprehend that, fine by me.

Hey Sarah - I am so sorry for your loss... Jim is right - it really is there loss...

and yet another problem in the U.S. fire service - the older members do not know how to mentor their younger members and how to bring them into a department to create the next generation of firefighters - to the point that they are willing to run a department without staff, short-staff, or illegally staffed. Smart fire departments work hard to build up the next generation of firefighters and know that their time as firefighters is limited - we all must retire eventually. Weak department leaders fight to hold their own positions and controlling nature by pushing out fresh new members, so they do not have to be accountable and responsible as a forever revolving and developing community agency. Many will work this way until their fire department closes and will still defend that their way was the best - despite the catastrophic impact to their own community.

In the U.S. right now, more than 1000 fire stations can not get insurance because they do not have a sufficient number of staff - which legally means - they should not be a fire department - and they are putting their members - and their community at great risk. Sounds like your old department is either already in that 1000 high-risk group, or very close to joining those illegally run stations.

I am glad to hear that you have moved on. I know you were considering that a year ago as well. It just sucks that they chose to do it in a mean way, but it seems like it may be a blessing in disguise. You are a gem! Keep shining on!!!  Find a department that appreciates you and nurtures you and welcomes you into their family!

While we always like to be in charge of the direction of our lives, we have to be able to redirect when a when one opportunity is removed. It sounds like they were not interested in having you long-term as a member of their team - so you are truly better off finding another fire department HOME :)

You are a smart and passionate. You are learning to be a very skilled and savvy firefighter and I have no doubt that you have a long career ahead of you. Consider this a life-learning lesson. Not everyone is in your corner, and you are your own best advocate.

I know that despite being related to a pile of the firefighters on my department a handful of the men on my department did not like that I was young and female and they worked very hard to intimidate me and belittle me and chase me away from the department. I swear it took me almost 10 years to earn their respect.

I am here if you need to chat. Sounds like you are successfully redirecting. Keep marching forward - get some college education and paid work experience under your belt and build up some other aspects of your life - so you are well-rounded and happy in many areas of your life....

GOOD LUCK !
