Ok so im about to start my first season as a wildland firefighter.Ive had these Hawthorn wildland boots from my Volunteer station. But I think they might be to big for my foot.I feel like i have play from side to side.

Im under the impression whites are supose to be the best. But i start working in 4 weeks and it takes 6-8 weeks to get whites. And they wont be broken in yet either.

Should i use what ive got until the whites come in. Are my current boots good enough etc.

What kind of boots do you preffer and why?

Which version of whites do you like lace to toe or smoke jumper?

Is there another brand to look into, that might get me in a better time frame, but still good boot?

What kind of socks do you recommend and use and why?(cotton, thick , double up, maybe a brand)

Wear what you've got now and try thick 100% cotton socks for starters. Keep mink oil on the leather to keep it soft and waterproof. Lace them snugly. Carry moleskin for use on blisters if they occur. Also apply Gold Bond powder each morning. Take really good care of your feet. Wash them well every day. If you have foot problems you'll be miserable. My boots are White's Smokejumpers and they've been wonderful. Wouldn't trade them for anything. Another great brand is Nick's. But I'd stick with the one's you've got now and talk to the other guys during the season about what to get next. Like you said --- too late to break anything in. Have fun and stay safe!
Thanks, I decided to order Whites and use what I got until the Whites come in.They are supose to arive as soon as im out of the academy. So i figure ill break them in around the station.
Thomas,
Any truth to the old story about filling your boots with water and wearing them until they dry out?
I haven't seen anyone actually do it.
