Starting a firefighter career over 40

For those over 40 that started late but can keep up with the best. Why did you start so late in life? Are we crazy? What does your family think? Is training harder?

I'm 52 and started just this year. The reasons are a few. At first my wife thought I was nuts, but I think she understands now. She's a nurse so what's not to understand? This is another way to set an example to the kids in the community you are never too old to learn something new. I wanted to do this because I am still in decent shape for my age (much better than most) and because I can do it and have the desire to help others. I needed a kick in the pants and this has started me looking at degrees that overlap with my daytime job and the fire service. I am truly looking forward to the opportunities this presents to make contributions to my community as they occur.
I hope you all have a great Christmas and even better New Years.

I'm 43 just started this year (volunteer). Spent 16yrs in the military had a heart attack and got out. I found military training helped out alot. No fear of an scba because of chemical masks, did some fire fighting training in basic training (smoke house, live burn). i'm far from in my prime but i think i can still hang with the young boys, I enjoy it alot i've meant some good people and getting to know how to get around and network with others. But I think the best part about it is i can give back to my community, to be a part of it feels good.

Welcome Kevin and Lee to the group . It is good to see others that decided it was not to late to get into the business . My family supports me just as yours does and that makes it that much better . Be safe and God Bless.

Another old "newbie" here. I finally started because I always felt that something was missing in my life. Technically, I was a tender 391/2 when I got on the department, but my family is very proud and supportive. All the guys tell me that I've got brass ones to join at my age:)
