As most of you should know the FCC is mandating narrow banding by 2013. WE, our MABAS division and the entire county, just got the 10 questions prior to the award. 23 departments and 1 dispatch center to the tune of $665,000, this includes everything to complete the narrow banding, new stuff, reprogramming and paperwork. My question is; does anybody have any experience with this? Without everyone throwing the switch at once, this looks to be a nightmare. We border 2 counties and use 2 dispatch centers, with the other county just starting to think about it. We look to be the first in the state, and a guinea pig in this process, so come on, Mike, Chris, Ben, Ted, Paul, TJ, Art and all the rest….I need a communication plan.

Well it’s a new day, couple of aspirin, good nights sleep, and I feel better.

Receiving and transmitting wide/narrow works one way, as stated not as loud, but the other way sounds like an open mike. I can see this is going to take a few smart people, locked in a room with a big white board to come up with a plan, which leaves me out. Maybe I’ll pull out the U/C vehicle, its got a bunch of white boards.
Don, if you have anything in writing, say a plan or model, and can share it with me, that would be great. Maybe an IAP or AAR or a CAP, anything, am I sounding desperate, were shooting in the dark.
Our statewide MA, MABAS has 6 fire ground channels, 3 wide 3 narrow; no we are not on a repeater. These are I believe 4 watt, linkers are also not allowed for these channels. The best things I can think of is to leave our programming in place; on a different bank, put in the new stuff, then when everyone is ready, make the switch. Then go back reprogram with new on normal bank and eliminate the old stuff. Thoughts??
Well, I would think the ones shoving it up our ...
noses would have the plan.
Have you talked to Cratty yet?
I'm sure that there was thought to this before he inked the grant.
What is he saying?
I would hate to see all of the grant money go to a consultant.

He was hoping to get a model from someone else in the state, well guess what…..we are the first. All costs have been calculated, fees, programming and equipment, just don’t know what programming and how it will affect everyone else, radio protocol. As for paying a consultant we do have MABAS communication committee working with us, plus Supreme, I think they stand to make a little. .
Good site, good info and training, however; they say wide or narrow, mixing the 2 will create problems, this is not an option, and they don’t say it won’t work. I will admit I have not searched the whole site yet. I'm getting that headache again.
You know, Mr. MABAS President:
You have members that are violating the charter by not going red, white and blue and now, with the grant, they are going to be upgrading or in their case, LEAPING to something entirely new.
We have three years to get it done. It would be shameful if it can't be fully functional by then.
We are getting down to limited options. They aren't going to have a choice at some point.
We need to prepare and those that don't want to, give them to Reardon.
I told that same thing to several, well let’s say top officials. We have a chance to mandate, and yes I used that word, several changes. Set the policies and say this is the way it’s going to be, take it or go play by yourself. Did I mention we have a Polaris ranger coming?
Well Ted, we are still waiting for the “official” you have the money. We got the 10questions that are the forerunner to the money, so we are on hold till its official. We have formed the committee and have had several discussions but this will take some time. We are also working with a state committee to set the president for the state.
No government, the state committee is with our MA origination MABAS, and we have a statewide plan, just got to fill in the local stuff, like getting everyone off there friken private channels. Check out the link below, may have to copy and paste.
