Around 6 a.m. Sunday, February 21, Baltimore City (Maryland) Fire Department units were alerted for a reported building fire in the area of Interstate 83 and Union Avenue, in the city's Clipper Mill/Hampden area. BCFD Engine 21 arrived at a large warehouse/industrial type building in the 1700 block of Union Avenue, approximately 100 x 300 and multiple floors, with heavy fire and smoke showing. Command ordered exterior/defensive operations, and struck 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th alarms. Crews were hampered by limited water availability and difficult access. At least 5 ladder pipes and several deck guns were used, and FFs operated on the southbound travel lanes of I-83.
