Firefighters VS. Cops THE EPIC BATTLE LOL

So let me start by just saying that it was pure boredom that lead me to youtube today. After a few stand up comedians, some guys being hit in the groin, and a squirl (wait... how do you spell squirl?) that ended up on the wrong end of a clay pigeon thrower; I found myself watching the now famous "fireman vs. policemen" videos. For those of you who havn't seen this series, definatly check it out because its funny!!!!

Anyway... after watching all eight or nine installments of this series, I sat wondering why is there a barrier between cops and firefighters that makes even the great wall of China seem tiny. Just then my chief walks in the door and asks what I'm doing. I say "well, I'm wondering why we hate cops so much." After only a brief second of thought he comes back with "because they are all di*ks!" We both smile and laugh and I was fairly certain that was the best answer I was going to get from him so I let it go.

Yet here I am writing this still wondering why this unspoken dislike for each other still goes on. I mean lets think about it... we have the potential to work together on almost a daily basis, both our jobs entail helping people, we both get to run lights and sirens LOL, we both try to make our community a safer place to live and work... So really why is it that we cant stand each other?

Now comes in one of my captains and I pose to him the same question as my chief. His answer "well when was the last time a firefighter wrote anyone a ticket?" "True" I say, after all; no one likes speeding tickets but lets face it... we would be running alot more MVA's if people could drive like they were cruising the autobahn when they are really just running to the local grocery store.

I may have my own reasons after a viscious love triangle between myself, a very good looking girl, and a law enforcement officer (LOL, boy was that a mess) that ultimatly led to the attractive female in question ending up in the arms of the man whose badge says "to protect and serve" (just to be clear, my badge doesnt say that LOL) However, after a few days of steaming, I cooled off and got over it. Weeks later, the same police officer and myself got into another argument that actually had nothing to do about the opposite sex. Let me explain by saying that I have been a HUGE proponent of using two heavy apparatus to completly block the roadway on ALL MVA's. I have simply read too many articles about FF's being hurt or killed just because some as*hole in his Mercedes drinking a latte and talking on a cellphone decided to fly through an accident scene at eighty miles an hour. Personally, I could care less about how long traffic is blocked because I want my fellow FF's to be as safe as possible. But where does the cop come into play you ask? Well... on one particular MVA we ran awhile back, the officer decided it was his responsibilty to keep the roadway as open as possible and spent the entire time complaining to any FF he could find on scene about how traffic was backing up. I literally mean that this guy was yelling at a FF while he was trying to cut a post on the damaged car and extricate the pt. So we get back to the station and seeing as I already had it in for this cop and was totally furious, I took it upon myself to go to the police station and get into it with this guy. No we didnt actually fight but there was alot of yelling and screaming. Yeah I know... big mistake on my part and it ultimatly led to me giving an offical apoligy to the police department.

Anyway... lets get back to the point shall we... Other then this particular event, I really have no reason to hate cops, I've never even gotten an actual ticket ( plenty of warnings but never any fine), but if you ask me what I think about the boys in blue... I will probably tell you that there a bunch of idiots. Why??? I really couldn't tell you. Yeah seems silly doesnt it... but I know I'm not the only one and I'm also fairly certain that police officers feel the same way. I recently attended a basketball game at my little brothers elementary school, after the game, my brother introduces me to one of his friends dad's and says "my brother's a firefighter" The guy gives me a lookover and says "oh yeah? I'm a cop." Friends let me tell you that you could have cut the air with a knive after that. Now I had never met this guy before, had no problems with him, yet once we knew what the other did, we instantly found ourselves having a mutual hate for each other.

Well... I'm still sitting here wondering why. And to tell you the truth I'm not sure I will ever be able to give you an answer, but in any case, if you have any stories like the ones above or just something funny to share about the topic, or could offer any insight as to why we firefighters and cops simply cant stand each other, please share because I'm still scratching my head on this one

I have spoken to firefighters and heard of fire departments that hate cops, that just do not get along with them.  I guess we are just fortunate to have some really good law enforcement officers here.  I personally know most of the deputies and several of the state troopers in our district by name, and for the most part, we all play nicely together.  Now, of course, there is your typical wordplay back and forth, but none of it is taken seriously.  I have had one of our deputies actually come back and apologize to me for something he said, as he wasn't sure that I knew that he was joking.  It makes working with them on scene very nice.  And as far as cops not being useful except for their jobs.......I have seen them assist with water supply and/or backing up our guys on an outside hoseline on structure fires, help move patients on EMS calls, do CPR on codes......You name it.  When we need help, they are typically more than willing to give us a hand.

How do you boys like this one. Seven years ago I was hired as a Johnson City (new york) firefighter and one month after my brother was hired as a JC cop. So I can't say i hate cops. But it does make for very interesting holiday meals. He says that all we do is sleep and watch tv all day and i set the record straight with him. I mostly tell him that when I need him to block off the street so I can go and my job then I'll call him. LOL Paul Bailey

For the most part we get along with the cops. There have been a few occasions that we have had our disagreements but that comes with the territory. There are a few that we even joke around with telling them that they just wish that they were firefighters. Some even used to be on our "side". One of the current city cops is the reason that I am in the fire service today. When we first met he was a firefighter and brought me to his department and I haven't looked back since. Just last week a couple of us firefighters went and helped the PD pick up their new units. I think that we get along because we all know how tough each of our jobs would be without the other's help.

We get along great with all our officers, county & state. The biggest problem we come across is if we want to shut down a highway for safety we occasionally run across a trooper who does not know our tactics or has too much brass on his collar and wants to keep traffic flowing regardless. Other than that we all get along great, especially since most of our deputies are or used to be volunteer firefighters.

In our area, we get along great with the State Police. Unfortunately the local city police in our neighboring city seem to have it in for us. They have the same frequencies in they're radios as we do, so every call we recieve, they they run to vantage points to watch our members(who live in, or pass through the city) respond. We have advised not to use any warning devices untill clear of the city limits. On one recent occasion, an officer followed one of our members directly to our station, to interupt his response for a stucture fire, to yell at him because he was running a light, not 360 deg. visible.(dash light)
Just the other night, we had an EMS response inwhich we had to pass through the edge of the city. We were running lights and siren, and were able to make a clean pass on a tractor trailer that had slowed for us but was unable to pull off. Sure as anything, there he was! Just waiting in the shadows! After the diabetic patient was loaded for transport, one of our younger members advised me that the police would like to speak to the officer in charge. That would be me! He proceeded to tell me that the pass I made(yes I was at the wheel) was uncalled for! He didn't think that an altered mental state call afforded us to respond in that fassion. I told him I was clear for the pass, and not wanting to make a scene at the scene(if you will), told him I would be more careful in the future.
We've had this problem with these officers, liking to throw they're weight around with us for a long time. It's a shame they can't see us as good guys trying to make a difference. As an agencey they have to be able to work with, or help out. Instead, they like to be hard asses, letting us know who's really in charge here! I am abit concerned of the outcome, if we ever do end up in a real battle with them. Untill then, we can only tread lightly in they"re area.

Interesting;

First we have a very good relationship with our local and state law enforcement in this area. Had a sergeant bring us doughnuts to an extended MVA once. From what I’ve seen, prior to 9/11 the fire service always seemed like a bastard step-child, police got everything, money was a biggie, and left the fire dept to scrap up what ever they could or was left. I think the tide has turned a little; we now at least get some federal help. Where it all got started I have no idea, but will guess money had something to do with it.

I like cops. They make great HazMat "canaries". Other than getting metals for running into burning homes for a save and I can't shot a bad guy; we're good.

Firefighters Vs. Police. Thats what we have hockey games for!! Nothing like seeing a cop go flying after being checked into the boards.

Sounds like a personal problem. It's usually cured by age. If not you weren't paying attention in life. TCSS

This is a weird topic, and I have seen things along this line posted on several websites. Yet, I personally don't see it in my area. Maybe we're lucky here, but we all seem to get along on the job, and even hang out together outside our jobs.
