You Maybe an Alcoholic Firefighter if you Drink Like This

This is how I as an alcoholic drank off duty and how bad it got, to the point of suicide.http://ineverwantedtobeafirefighter.blogspot.com/

Firefighters Don't Work in Cubicles, but you Would Never Know it by our Start Time.

I have a question. Why is it that most firefighter shifts start around 7:00 am? Why are firefighters forced to deal with rush hour traffic and add to the rush hour mess? After all we work a 24 hour shift, why couldn’t we begin our day at say 10:00am or 11:00am?…

New Firemen are Smarter, but are they Better?

There is a life cycle for a firefighter. Some people say as a child, I want to be a firefighter when I grow up and they do. Some like me fall into it and now a days there is a new type of firefighter, the well educated-advanced-degree-holding-uncommitted-I-need-a-job-for-now kind.…

Challenges for the new decade

Now that the new decade has started and having had time to reflect on what I have and have not achieved over the last 10 years it is time to set some goals.

1. Family always comes first;

2. Lose those excess kilograms;

3. Get fit;

4. Remain active and involved not just in firefighting but in my community as well;

5. Keep learning;

6. Continue to promote firefighting as a career choice not just for those who want to do this as paid work but for those people… Continue

There’s at least Four Cs in NBFC

Earlier today I had the pleasure of joining lots of other folks who participating in the dedication of a new fire station for the North Boston Volunteer Fire Company in the Town of Boston, NY.

As I was sitting here remembering the ground breaking ceremony they held last fall, I was reminded of how proud I am to be associated with their fire company.

Many times when we discuss incident management, training and collaboration in…

Japanes Fire Station Burns

Taken from KCMQ.com.

A Japanese fire station burned to the ground after a firefigher forgot to turn off the stove before responding to an emergency call. Ten trucks from other stations were called to put out the fire. A fire department official said “since we should be in a position to educate people about fire, we are are extremely sorry that such an incident happened.”

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Last night I cooked dinner for our firehouse and Morristown NJ softball game. Our company won the game, but that's not really what the event was about. It was about participation on a team, and working together for a common goal which is what the fire department is all about.

While I was setting up for the game, I was with the old timers, whom I spend every afternoon with at Station 4. No matter what problem you have, or question you have, the old timers have a good and sometimes… Continue
