“There is no award for doing your job” - public expectations of the modern fire service.

The top priority of most Fire Service Organizations is the satisfaction of the public and professional image. Let me ask you today,  how does one attain that? When the public calls for our assistance from the most minor medical call, to a residential lockout, to a fire in a building we are expected to operate in a efficient and professional manner.  The public expects us to run into that burning building, the public expects us to render aid to that person, they expect us to help them in any…

How to Prolong Fire Department Equipment Life

As firefighters, we have a lot riding on our equipment. We demand more out of our gear than practically any other profession, because if it fails, it can cost a whole lot more than just money. How, then, can we ensure that our equipment doesn’t break down when we need it the most?

The answer is simple: check your equipment regularly. This seems like a no-brainer, but when you consider the realities of the…

KNIGHTS IN KHAKI GREEN

   DEDICATED TO THE RODEO-CHEDISKI FIREFIGHTERS

and the rest who risk their lives to save others

Once upon a time there were mountain castles

Standing proud against clear blue skies

    Surrounded by green majestic forests

Red-tailed hawks and eagles soaring high

There were knights who protected the forest

    Valiant knights with senses keen

Brave and strong not in shining armor

    Gallant knights all clad… Continue

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...June 4, 2010

It's a warm day in NJ and today begins our Relay for Life event at Mennen Arena. We have a team of about 40 people in support of one of our own who has cancer. Our team was put together last minute but it doesn't matter. We do what we need to do. In a short time we raised over $5,000 for the American Cancer Society.

I am happy to contribute to Relay and looking forward to showing support for someone who has made a real contribution as a firefighter and a police…

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...May 26, 2010

Today is my mom's birthday. Happy Birthday Antoinette! I know she is looking down on me. She is the main reason I became a volunteer. Volunteer ffs in Bellport, NY saved her life and it made such a big impression on me. Volunteers lived on my cul-de-sac (like 6 out of 10 homes) and they got a pulse before EMS arrived. She was literally blue, without oxygen for about five minutes. That happened 14 years ago and she's been gone for…

USFA reaches out to FFN PIOs to take advantage of free resources

FROM THE FFN PIO GROUP:

At first I was a little confused about the following message because I wasn't sure where it originated from and where it was intended to go.

As I read it a second time, I realized that it had come from the US Fire Administration and it was meant specifically for us - the PIO group on FFN. Now, that's pretty cool that DHS has recognized our group as a target audience and partner for…

Saving a life?

I have been very recently disscussing on another junior posting about juniors and their role. I also tend to go to the home page (not just juniors) of a poster and see what they're about. I can sometimes get a good feeling about what or why they are posting a comment.

I have seen a few persons post on their page things about "wanting to save a life". Now this got me to a thinking about what do they mean by save a life? I posted this question to a young man. He is probably (hopefully) still… Continue

research paper

I am writing my research paper for english on should it be nessecary for a career firefighter to have basic EMT training. I was going to try to get some input from true career firefighters. I personally believe that there should be at least 3-4 on each shift who are trained in emt but not all should be required to. what do you think? anything posted could help.

My Top 16: Rethinking the Life Safety Initiatives

In a couple weeks, I’ll be attending the Everyone Goes Home Safety Summit. I’m pretty excited about it because I support the Life Safety Initiatives and what the program’s trying to do. To prepare for the event, I’ve been studying up on the LSIs and it occurred to me that despite how many times I’ve read them, I don’t really remember them. Of course I remember something about changing to a safety-based culture, and I know there’s… Continue
