The Effects of Inbred Training

The Effects of Inbred Training

When we picture the word inbreeding we imagine movies such as, “Wrong Turn” with mutated and deformed humans that are cannibals. Thoughts of some mountain shack with a family that has never seen the outside world speaking in an unknown dialect that only they can understand. Inbreeding can lead to mental and physical mutations that limit a person’s ability to grow properly…

Strong Winds and Undercurrents in 2016

Do any of you remember Chief Reason?

Yeah; I used to be a regular here back in the day.

Fun fact; Tiger Schmittendorf and Art "ChiefReason" Goodrich were the very first bloggers signed to FIREEMSBlogs.com. That has been a while ago.

When I look at the list of bloggers there now, I see that my friends at My Own Worst Enemy and Firehouse Zen are the only ones left from days gone by.

I believe that with our time during the day being so constrained; more and more are…

Cooking in the firehouse is pretty difficult.  One of the biggest fears of every firehouse chef is not preparing enough food for the crew.  This fear usually leads to an excess of available food and larger portions around the table.  So, today I wanted to give you a quick and easy “trick” you can use to get your crew to take smaller servings.

Answer this question:  Which is the larger black circle – the left or the right?…

Healthy Eating Rules for the Firehouse

What do you need for survival?  I’m not talking about your phone, technology or a certain person; I mean what does your body need to survive?  If you said food you would be correct… the single most important thing you need to focus on at that point is what to eat.…

Firefighting Jobs on Hilton Head Island

It doesn't work very well, it seems, to post something on the forums, as they just get buried in minutes.  If you want to know more about our department and why I'm eager to share this message with you, I have spelled it out in detail on my blog at Firehouse Zen.

How Dedicated to Serve Are You?

When you say we'll protect you and serve you, where do you draw the line? Does there have to be a fire? A medical emergency? Or just a genuine need for help when you have run out of places to go or people to turn to?

Tales from a tailboard fireman, Eddie's gloves

New Year's Eve in San Francisco. The year 2010 came really fast. Got up the nerve to call my friend who rode the tailboard with me on Engine 7 many years ago. He is dying of cancer now: a slow death and he is in pain and knows the end is near. He was always a man of courage who took things on head first. He is dealing with this the same way. What do you talk about with someone who is so near to death? He is not the first of my fire department buddies to die of cancer.

There is a long… Continue

Tales from a tailboard fireman. Firehouse rules and regs

Fire departments are para-military organizations. As with most things in life this leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Some departments are run with strict military disipline, while others are lax at the firehouse. But as we know, there is no room for discussion on the fire ground.

In San Jose, we lived by the OAG (Official Action Guide). This very thick 3-ring binder had rules covering everything from when you got up in the morning to how long your hair or mustache could be (a… Continue

Tales from a tailboard fireman. Firehouse behavior 2

Food at the firehouse brought some good comments. Seagulls are birds that inhabit coastal areas and dumps. They are also firefighters who swoop other people's food. We have all done it at some level, but some make it an everyday event. Most firehouses have three cabinets designated for the three shifts to keep their supplies in. Staples that are not covered by house dues are fair game to all. The private shift stash is sometimes locked to prevent "gulling." Big houses may have three… Continue

Tales from a tailboard fireman: Firehouse behavior

Most people on the street know firefighters eat at work and do other stuff as shown on TV or in movies. They have no idea of the complex social system that exits behind those roll-up doors.

While traveling in Italy years ago I visited a firehouse in Florence. While being given a tour, I noticed the cabinets in the kitchen had padlocks on them. When I asked, I was informed it was to protect against, "The other shifts stealing our food." Same problem the world over. Food and all that implies… Continue

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...April 10, 2009

I think this was the first time in my life I didn't reflect on the fact that today was Good Friday. I've been working so hard at my new part-time job, which I LOVE, writing webcontent for lawyers. Everything else is privileged so I cannot say more. I am, of course, still a realtor and tomorrow morning will be boxing up a tiny house for someone who died.

It's been pretty quiet around the firehouse. Last week was a our pancake… Continue
