“Firemen are going to get killed. When they join the department they face that fact. When a man becomes a fireman his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished. What he does after that is all in the line of work. They were not thinking of getting killed when they went where death lurked. They went there to put the fire out, and got killed. Firefighters do not regard themselves as heroes because they do what the business requires.”

speaking upon the death of a deputy chief and
four firefighters in February of 1908

H ey everybody, In a world of passing around a pile of chain letters and such, I am asking everyone who gets this to send it on to every group and friend they have to try and help out a fellow North Carolina Fire Department for me. It takes about 3 minutes of your busy time to read their story, click the VOTE link, and then click the link in your email to confirm the vote.

I am lucky enough to belong to a decently financed department, but I know how hard it is for some departments to… Continue

FINALLY getting paid to play

Posted on June 10, 2008 at 8:28am 3 Comments

Well I guess all this insane training I have been doing since March has finally paid off. My department has hired me part time (like all the others who are getting paid). June 4th was my first day as a paid FF. We dont run much, the paid staff is there to make sure that things that needing to get done are done. But still, its a paid position which just tickles me to death. :)

Yall be safe out there...... Be good becareful be safe

Isler and Monroe Funeral, Salisbury NC

Posted on March 14, 2008 at 3:46am 2 Comments

Today was a day NO ONE should have to deal with, unless one of our own has fallen because of old age.

It started out like any other semi normal day for a Volunteer Fire Department. Aside from getting the crews ready for the funeral, the Captains and Chiefs making last minute rig assignments, the tones go off around 1130 for an unknown Medical. The Captain and I jump in the squad and head out, deal with a hyperventalating patient, and return to the station. Our Engine Co, 561, is… Continue

Salisbury Fallen returning home 1530 Hrs 11 March 08

Posted on March 10, 2008 at 12:21am 0 Comments

My station has been advised that the procession returning the bodies from Charlotte NC to Salisbury NC will be entering Rowan County around 1530 Hours 11 March 08.

We have been told to be on the bridge over Interstate 85 at 1530, so I would GUESS that it will be leaving Charlotte around 1400-1430 or so... I would also GUESS that it will be going Interstate 77 North around exit 9 or so in Charlotte to Interstate 85 North Exit 13 (entering I-85 near the 36 exit) to Salisbury Exit 75 or… Continue

Fire in Salisbury NC

Posted on March 8, 2008 at 3:03am 0 Comments

Over 3 LDH lays, one nurse pumper feeding out of two drop tanks supplying water to an aerial, and I filled over 30 tankers with water today along with a Chief, Captain, Engineer and another Fire Fighter. Personally was on the water point for over 4 hours today with my department running tanker shuttles.

There were trucks and crews from almost every department in the county, both career and volunteer, along with 4 other counties providing trucks, crews, and resources. We all know what… Continue
