Bonjour Maxime,
Welcome to the FFN! Just want to clarify that I am a volunteer firefighter and not affiliated with FDNY. We do coexist and oftentimes work together. In New York City, there are nine volley companieswhich are officially recognized, because they are grandfathered by law. One company disbanded last year under city orders. Then there are three others which operate but are recognized, but unofficially. A lot of this stems from city by-laws, the unions and politics in general. The reality is that we are considered relics, since fire protection in the five boroughs is officially served by the FDNY; of which I must say that I have the highest respect for. Take care and stay safe, brother!
