Funeral for Westland, Michigan Firefighter

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Ranks of hundreds of uniformed firefighters have turned out for the funeral Mass is planned for a 29-year-old colleague who died in a blaze at a Detroit-area strip mall.

The service for Westland firefighter Brian Woehlke was Monday at Church of the Divine Child in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn.

The Detroit News says at least 200 fire trucks were parked as many as three-deep across the street from the church.

The Dearborn resident died Wednesday during the Westland fire. Survivors include wife Jennifer and their 13-month-old daughter Ava.

Eighty-four-year-old Dearborn resident Jerry Wojciechowski (woh-zhe-KAU'-skee) was watching as mourners gathered and tells the Detroit Free Press he respects firefighters and the job they do.

Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. flags lowered to half-staff at state offices in Woehlke's honor.

Contributions to the Brian Woehlke Charity may be made to the Westland Fire Fighters Charity, P.O. Box 851320, Westland, MI 48185, or may be delivered to any of five Wayne-Westland fire stations.
