Don't have a dog yet, but I plan on getting a German Shepard when I get older

This is my Brownie boy. He is the best chocolate lab ever. He is blind.

We adopted him 4 years ago when we moved to Tennessee. He gets along great as long as I don't move the furniture :-) He is definitely a people dog, loves to get out and meet new people. He was a great addition to our family!

I thought you all might be interested in a calender that I put together for our department - it's called "Dogs & Their Firefighters - 2011" and includes firefighters posing with their dogs around the stations and on various pieces of apparatus. All proceeds from sales will go to pet rescue groups in our area. Here's a link - if you are interested in helping us raise some money for homeless pets, buy a calender and enjoy it while knowing you are making a difference to help pets who need it! Go to: www.rimrockreflections.com, in the Fire Gallery.

Don, my deepest and most heartfelt sympathies. I fully understand what you and your family are going through on the loss of Cairo. I have wished the same things over and over about my beagle, Jack (even though it has been 2 1/2 years since we had to put him down, I'm getting tears in my eyes as I type this). I speak from experience when I say to just thank God for the time you had with him, and you will feel it when the time is right to give another lucky dog the second chance you gave Cairo.

Last mouth I had to put may lab Cairo down, he was about eleven years old. He was not a puppy when we got him , he had been abandoned at a kennel that my sister-in-law was working at. My wife was then my fiance and had wanted to get a dog together, she had always had dogs growing up but I never did, so he was my first dog. His name was Argo when we got him but I had to change it because I live I Hamilton, Ontario and if you don't know anything about Canadian Football the Toronto CFL club is the Argonauts or "Argos", Cairo seemed like something he would take to and he did. The moment my wife and I walked in the room he knew he had found a family and that he would never be left alone again. I still can't get my head around the fact that someone just left him and never came back. Did they feel guilty? Did they even care? How could anybody do that to him? We had Cairo for ten years. He was not the prefect dog and I was not the perfect master, but I would love to have five more minutes with him. I was told that he was a very old school type of Lab that was a true hunting breed, I can't back that up but I can tell you that he was fast. I never say him around a greyhound but before we had him fixed (and he gained 20 lbs) he was never around a faster dog. When I would play fetch with him he would always try to stop right at my feet and often would hit me in the knees, it actually got scary, he hurt me pretty good on more then once. He was very protective of my daughters when they were born, and always love being with children, but didn't always take to adults. Are great dane Asia has been so sad that she tries to get in the car if we go anywhere. If we don't take her we find her cowering when we get home, and I think that's the hardest for me. I remember when my 2ND daughter was born and my wife was still in the hospital and I let him on the bed with me. I knew this would hurt but I didn't knew I didn't knew it would be this bad. He start having seizes about a year and a half ago medication helped but then had a tumor removed from his but about nine months ago. By the time he died I don't think he knew who I was.
Thank Dr. Ball and the Brookville Veterinary Clinic, thank you to my sister-in-law Joanne for rescuing him, and thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this.
Cairo, I sorry I wasn't more patient with you. Brooke wrote "worst day" on the calender when you died. I love you and we all miss very much.
