For a first time hunter you are better off spending the few days and taking a hunters safety class. YES it will be full of younger kids just starting, but you will also be educated on the laws, the safety and (I hope) a shooting course. I started hunting by purchasing a shotgun and a orange vest. I memorized the states laws in the booklet, bought the tags and started on small game, then advanced to deer. There is nothing to it. I spent a few days (and shot what seemed like a zillion shells) on the range. Shooting will build proficiency and it is what prevents foolish injuries and also prevents wounding of animals.

Walter who ever told you that has more money then they have sense, you need to find a gun & scope( if you are shootin longer distances) that suits you the best & that you are comfortable with. Mite be a shotgun with slugs, or even buckshot ( if its legal in your state) , you dont need fancy gear to hunt, been huntin since I was 9 yrs lod & never had high dollar equipment. But you have to do you homework so to speek, study up on habits and that sort of stuff. Then do you scoutin bout a month before season open until bout a week before, then go get um!! Be sure to know your states laws on baitin & legal means of takin a deer. You can get hunting regs just bout anywhere that deals with sporting goods. GOOD LUCK & hope you have fun & get a trophy.

If you arent into eatin deer meat then look into sportsman against hunger to donate you meat to the hungry.

Another Saturday Night fishing trip. This night I thought would be destined for success but again I was skunked. Ran into some more schools of Bunker, but nothing chasing them. I will try to update again next weekend.

question for the hunting veterans. i have never gone3 hunting before and would like to give it a shot. i live in IL. and would like to start deer hunting. what type of equipment would you suggest a rookie to use? gun type, scope if one is suggested and any ideas you might have. talking to people at work, from what they were saying i would need to spend several thousand dollars to even get started. i dont have several thosand dollars to spend i just want the basics but i want effective basics. any help is appreciated

thanks

Went salt water fishing last night. Caught the last of the incoming tide, the entire ebb tide, and than the first 4 hours of outgoing tide. It was a wierd night with the water being smooth as a sheet of glass and the current not running as fast as normal. The fish weren't there which made it a long night. (10pm-4am) I will update again next Saturday night and hope to catch some fish to grab some photos

Jim, try joining a outdoors club. A good gun club will afford you some relationships with co hunters and also give you the opportunity to refine your shooting.
