Hi ladies,
I'm new to the site but so far I enjoy the what I've read. I think I may have a lil bit different story...
I will be 40yrs old next month and I am looking forward to the day I am able to wear a firefighters badge. Illinois has an age restriction of 35 for full time FF but no age for part time and what I have decided to do to make myself more marketable is enroll in an EMT program and after that I will enter a fire academy that I will pay for myself. So, I'm looking at being FF/EMT-B ready at the end of 2012.

My family and friends think I'm nuts but that's ok, my guy supports it 100% and he's a Police Officer (he would like it if I were a PO like him). I would be the ONLY FF in my family which would be cool. I am also the only Veteran in my family so being the ONLY "something" doesn't bother me.

I have 3 children and two of them are girls so I enjoy being their role model. I could have chosen this path sooner if I'd known other women who did it or at least seen there were women out here doing it.

It may be harder because of my age but I am DETERMINED!
Thanks for this group.

I am trying to get in to the Orange county Fire Department in California. I have not yet been to the academy but am preparing for it. Any advise from anyone on how I can prepare, other than working out? ANYTHING would be helpful! I know it is hard for women and so I really want to kick ass. You can e-mail me at MTMRISS@HOTMAIL.COM THANK YOU!!!

Good point Charley.
Like you I dont care how 'beautiful' the ff backing me up on the hose or running the pump is as long as they know their job and do it.
Cheers.

Well, Allison, you ask a pretty broad question about something we naturally do in the fire service. "do we judge"? Yes, we do, we all look at who's behind us or outside coming in to get us if we need help. I think that's very natural.Male or female, we judge on whether or not we trust who we see in that role. As far as treating each other badly? I think it's part of our unhealthy, dysfunctional culture that we do that. For what they're worth those were my brief two cents

Wrong? Right? WRONG!
It's not about if female FF know about beauty - of course we do and and we know it comes in many forms not barbie-doll shallowness. This is about women behaving badly to each other. Do we judge our firefighting friends, colleagues and peers on the size of their body, amount of wrinkes or hair colour or do on the size of their heart, imtelligence, courage and kindness?

Hi everyone, attended the local Airshow as part of a fire crew last week - all went well, check out my images!

Re KD below seeking info on going career, self-belief is critical. If you want ti succeed, you need to believe that YOU CAN.
Keep up the physical training, practice the aptitude tests, find a training buddy and get a mentor who is already a career firefighter.
Good luck and go for it!
Cheers,
AA

Hello all!
So I know that this has probably been a topic/discussion before but I need some advice and I figure this would be the better place to find it. I have been a volunteer for three years and now I am working hard towards the transition of going pro. I understand some of the challenges I will face with getting hired here in Canada but I was hoping to get any further advice, tips and wisdom from you ladies. Anything will help. Thanks!

Hi everyone,
I’m a volunteer firefighter with the Country Fire Authority in Victoria, Australia. My brigade attends bushfire (wildfire) as well structure, Hazmat, MVA’s and other incidents.
Currently I’m in the Women and Fire Mentoring Program - http://www.cfaconnect.net.au/news/women-and-fire.html - if your fire dept runs something similar I’d love to hear about it.
Cheers,
AA
