Greetings,
This mail is for the newer friends and ones I don't chat with on a regular basis...just a little about me and what I do. My real name is Bill Denis. I was sworn into the FDNY Sept 5th 1981 and assigned to Engine 303 in South Jamaica Queens. After 8 years in the Engine I transferred across the floor to Ladder 126. In 1993 I was promoted to Fire Marshal and did Arson investigations for 4 years, In 1997 after missing the firehouse and having 4 years till I could retire I took a voluntary demotion back to Firefighter & reassigned to Ladder 126 where I stayed until I retired Sept 6th 2001 with 20 years and 1 day on the job. Yes I did go back to work 5 days later when the WTC was attacked and worked at ground zero as a volunteer for the first week. I then started to attend the funerals, sometime 2-3 a day....very sad time.
In 1999 after attending a comedy show for my birthday we decided to stay at the club for cocktails (Imagine that...a bunch of firemen that drinks) anyway I was talking to the headliner and he told me about a Stand Up Comedy class given at the club. I took the class and my 1st performance was May 3, 1999, I got 'bit' by the comedy bug when I did my 2nd show in August. At that show I was befriended by a transit cop turned pro comedian/actor named John DiResta. John lives in Los Angeles and now when we perform together we bill the show as "Guns and Hoses" In 2000 John suggested that I put together a FDNY comedy benefit between us. I sent out flyers through 'The Job' looking for any guy who thought they were funny and wanted to be part of the show. I wound up with 6 other funny FDNY members that performed that year and continue to every year at our "Bravest Night of Comedy." To date we have raised over $60,000 for the Thomas Elsasser fund for widows and children of FDNY members that die outside the line of duty.
We have taken our "Bravest Night of Comedy" on the road and have done numerous firehouse shows and fundraiser's throughout the east coast in NY, NJ, CT, MA and as far away as Chicago twice. I made a myspace page just for the Firehouse shows and if you think you'd be interested in checking us out the page can be found here www.myspace.com/funnyfirefighters
If you'd like to see us perform LIVE we are performing 2 shows at the NJ State Fire Convention in Wildwood NJ at the American Legion Hall 4200 Atlantic Avenue at PM & 10pm.
I have a comedy for hire web page www.heythatsfunny.com to see the type of shows I can put together for your firehouse. ALL Fire Departments can ignore the prices listed on that page...I promise to take care of your company!
Can you please re-post this mail and help me get the word out about our shows and I hope to maybe see you in my audience someday...drinks after the show are on me!
