Massachusetts Firefighters Battle 5-Alarm Vacant Building Fire

FRANKLIN, Mass. — A five-alarm fire in a vacant building has forced the evacuation of several homes in Franklin.

The fire department says no injuries have been reported in the blaze, which was reported at about 2:30 a.m. Friday.

Officials describe the large building near the center of town as a former Masonic Temple that also once served as a dance studio.

Up to 100 firefighters from 12 different towns are involved in the fight.

In addition to the precautionary evacuation of several nearby homes, several local streets, including a busy section of Route 140, were closed to traffic.

There was no immediate word on a cause.

Franklin is located about 30 miles southwest of Boston.
