BALDWIN, N.Y. (AP) — A volunteer firefighter on Long Island has died after becoming ill at the scene of a fire.

Baldwin Fire Chief Kevin Smith says 43-year-old Michael Esposito became ill at the scene of a house fire on Grand Avenue early Wednesday. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was died.

Smith said Esposito was a former captain and a 21-year member of the department.

Nassau County fire officials said the cause of the fire was being investigated.
