Our department use accountability tags that we put on the engine board at 0700. The officer also logs in each member into firehouse with the seat assignment. Each seat has its own radio designation (A-Alpha, B-Bravo, C-Charlie, and D-David) that dispatch also has when the officer logs us in. The officer also has an engine tag attach to his air pack in the event that we're assigned to a division.
we just did a staged excersize with the local gas company at their power generation plant on last wednesdays practice, everything went extremly well except we hadn't addressed the acountability system yet so after we finished we sat down and decided on a board for the engine with everyone who shows up to check in at engine 1 upon arrival regardless who you are or if you show up late that way we have a way of knowing and it is simple
Ian,

Simple is the key. No matter what system or style of accountability you guys adopt remember K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid). The easier it is to use the more likely it becomes for everyone to use it all the time. And after all that's what it is all about
We have accountability tags but the best accountablility is to stay together. As an Officer, during a fire I always take the time to ensure that I know where each team is and I always check with those teams in order to ensure accountablility and air management regardless of the the tags that we carry.
That's a good idea, but it is now a legal requirement (OSHA) to physically maintain an accountability system outside the IDLH area/atmosphere, regardless of other safety procedures.
I am not sure what other departments do we use tags. Each person has two tags issued to be kept on your gear you turn them over to the ic when you are out to a task. It work very well.
