Try not to critique the actions of the companies in the video and instead offer how you believe your department would handle this fire.

Consider for discussion:

To dispatch: We have a working fire on 2nd floor of a 3 story semi-detached, 15x35, class 4 private dwelling (looks to me like brick veneer).  Address is_______________________. We'll use "all hands" (full 1st alarm assignment); Fire is doubtful will hold at this time. Exposures are a similar private dwelling with a narrow alley on B side, rear yard on C side and similar attached on D side.

Fire behavior: Concern is extension to 3rd floor and exposure B.  Cellar should be checked to see if fire originated there.

Apparatus positioning: Front of building for trucks. Allows access to 2nd and 3rd floor windows or roof, or large caliber stream application (not likely to be needed here unless there is a lot I'm not seeing in rear). Engine 1 to stop short of house as in video or move forward past house, depending on direction of travel of trucks and/or street width.

Line placement: 1st line through front door up stairs to fire area on 2nd floor. 2nd line to back up 1st and be ready to go to 3rd floor if needed. 3rd line to operate in exposure B alley area to extinguish any fire extending on exterior.

Portable ladders to exposure B and C sides for VES. Looks like fire may be contained to front room area with windows self vented.

Truck 1 to 2nd floor to begin search close to seat of fire. Close doors to isolate fire if ahead of line arrival. Check cellar for possible origin and shut utilities. VES by outside team. Truck 2 to floor above and exposure D to search and check for extension. Call for lines if needed. Open inspection holes in top floor ceilings to check attic conditions.

The following communications would be needed: Fire attack beginning, fire knocked down, discovery of extension (amount and location), result of searches, discovery of fire in cellar, structural deficiencies found.

Size-up Report- Engine 412 arrived on location with a 2 group row home I have heavy fire venting out Alpha bravo division 2  windows, exposure on bravo side laying in from hydrant.Working fire dispatch command post at alpha delta side exposure building

Fire Behavior fire already vented itself getting all air it wants and growing by the minute room and contents on fire, concerned about 3rd floor/attic spread and to the exposure check basement/cellar see if fire is in basement

  • Apparatus Positioning Engine 1 stop short from fire building stretch supply line get supply line to side of street, from nearest hydrant .truck 1 get just past fire building engine 2 get to hydrant engine 3 and 4 come other direction if possible get 2ndary water source 5th engine and 6th engine can go wherever
  • Hoseline Length Estimate for the Initial Hose line-  at least 150 -200 ft 1 3/4 in to front door
  • Placement of Backup and Secondary Hose lines- get a line for the exposure bravo side to protect that , another line in from rear of fire building if able to if not go in front door get a 4th line stretched to the alpha delta exposure for a back up line or there is fire in delta exposure,5th line at the front door or in fire building first floor just in case
  • Laddering the Building for Search and Ventilation - Ladder all windows of structure(s) possibly involved get the Ariel ladder to 3rd floor fire building if necessary get a crew to roof to ventilate
  • Communication During Incident -get a 360 of building advise your further findings Keep getting updates of what hose crew and other crews is doing and progress communicate where apparatus wanted to go and assignments what you want done ,try to determine if there is occupants in exposure gain access to check for extension and advise what you come across. Advise what resources you need( Electric/gas co, red cross ,medics etc)
