The City of South Bend Indiana is HIRING!! When departments all across the country have been laying off, we are hiring! The process is to be announced on Monday Nov. 9th, with applications being available through Dec. 14th. Target academy start date is May 2010.

The City Staffs 16 fire companies (11 engines, 4 trucks, 1 rescue), 7 Medic units (4 city, 3 county) a safety officer, an EMS supervisor, and 2 battalion chiefs with 250 sworn personal.

South Bend is a medium size city (107,000) located in Northern Indiana about 70 miles East of Chicago Il. We are a city that still sees a good amount of fire (approx. 650 fires last year), as well as traumas and medicals.

In addition to the fire/ems we also staff 3 regional special operations teams (Haz-Mat, Swift Water/Dive, and Technical Rescue).

South Bend is most known for the university of Notre Dame (go IRISH) and the home of Studebaker Auto.

Visit www.southbendfire.com after Monday for details about our hiring process. If you have questions please feel free to contact me at admin@southbendfire.com

So what is your staffing on the apparatus? Are your med units also suppression personnel?

It's nice you guys are hiring, I'm not looking to switch or anything but just curious, population sizes are similar between our cities.

Also with the SAFER grants being open this month and open for a month, we may see more departments hiring again soon.
Wanna fire a 19 year old Vollie Firefighter of which is going to finish FF1 and 2 come this spring? Hm? From maine? haha
Sounds like a plan but they will have to hire you first...
Our Min. Shift Strength is 68 firefighters. All Engines and trucks must have 3 (4 are assigned), the rescue must have 4 (5-6 are assigned) per day. The gut boxes have 2 per rig (and are suppression personal as well). the battalions, safety and EMS supervisor are single man buggys. usually the lowest man on a rig will get TDY'd to cover other companies vacancies when needed (for vacations and such).

Our busiest rigs are our medics of course...and they all made over 3000 runs last year (i believe medic 2 was closer to 4000) but there have been some redistricting and it is yet to be determined who is the busiest.

Engine 1 is the busiest engine @ around 2600 runs, again due to some redistricting it will be close between engine 2 and engine 3 as to who is the busiest.
must be 21 y/o to be hired

Whats the pay scale?
We are not the highest paid, but we are comparable for the area.

These are estimated figures...we just had a contract nego. and I dont recall what the exact pay scale is.

your first year its @ 36,121 (probie year)
after 1st year its 44,150
3rd year (Engineer) pay is around 48,000

Lt. pay (medics only) are around 50,000 (plus you will get the 5000.00 medic stipend on top of that).

Captains are around 53,000

There is a sliding scale for longevity pay.

i think (don't quote me) you get 350.00 stipend for emt, 500.00 for advanced emt, 1500.00 for reserve paramedic, 5000.00 for paramedic.

I know that the specialty teams get a stipend between 1000.00-1500.00 depending on your team and specialty.

Shift Instructors are also given a stipend.

Pub Ed is paid at the Captains rate.

There is also your uniform allowance of 450.00 ( i think, cant remember the exact amount).

Also, tons of Overtime available during the vacation months in addition to working Notre Dame Football, hockey, basketball (girls and boys) and soccer.
lol
