MOBILE, Ala. - Authorities say one man is dead after fire broke out in Mobile in a house piled high with newspapers, magazines and other items.

The Mobile Fire Department received a call late Tuesday about a house fire. Officials say they got a warning from the victim's son stating his 87-year-old father was a "hoarder" and that the house was full of items.

Once inside, firefighters could barely get around. They say most rooms were piled to the ceiling with items, leaving only narrow passageways. In some cases, firefighters had to go in and out of windows because they couldn't walk.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined, but it appears accidental. Fire officials haven't released the victim's name.
