I heard a call today where a 6 year old child got a hold of an adult's medicines and ingested them.  The child was unresponsive and had to be flown in a helicopter to a better facility that can handle such cases.  It got me thinking about the little guy in my life. He's not my kid, but the landlady's kid.  I told him to sit down and we had to have a little "talk"   I told him him about the other 6 year old and what happened.  I had to stress to him that it is so important for him to not take medicines by himself and that he should only take them when given to him by his mom or somebody he and his mom knows.  He hadn't himself taken any medicines, though I know he is on some.  I could see him doing it though. I just felt it was so important to tell him about what happened because I wouldn't want that for anybody's kid no matter how crazy they make me.

Please if you got a little one like that in your life, take a moment to remind them about it in a way that isn't confrontational and is relaxed. It only takes a moment  to tell them about it.

Few things are more frightening in life then to find your 5 year old surrounded by her cousin's phenobarbitol pills.  I still get the chills when I think about that day.  It only takes a second, luckily I caught her with the first "Candy" halfway to her mouth apparently as blood tests showed no phenobarbitol in her system at the hospital.

Mine happened when my in-laws brought their daughters phenobarbitol in their diaper bag then left the diaper bag on the floor where my daughter could get to it but kids are resourceful.  When you think you've got it safe or secure enough, make it safer or more secure.

Another thing to consider is the lack of child proof lids in certain homes. I know that when I take my 2 year old niece to my elderly parents home I move all of thier meds around. Because of arthriis none of the meds from motrin to RX have safety lids. This is something that not enough of us talk to people about.

Many times nobody even thinks about it until it is too late
